SUMMER YOUTH PROGRAMS

The Kewaunee County Sheriff’s Department has planned their seventh annual free five-week summer program for grade school age children starting July 19, 2010 and continuing through August 19, 2009. Each week the program will be repeated in four different locations. This year’s program topics are: Bullying and Cyber Bullying, Stranger & Computer Safety; Communication including Texting; and Bicycle Safety. These topics center on some of the 40 assets kids need to become successful and responsible young adults in their community. The chosen assets will be covered in a fun learning manner. The program will be held from 8:30 AM till 12 Noon in the locations as follows:

Monday at the Casco Village Park in Casco
Tuesday at the Cosmic Kids Learning Center in the Village of Luxemburg.
Wednesday at Haney Park in Kewaunee
Thursday at Wings of Eagles Academy/Calvary Assembly of God Church in Algoma

Alternative locations are available in the event of inclement weather only. Indoor games and activities are planned in the case of rain. Any children are welcome to attend the program.

This year five different assets will be presented. They are as follows:

Week One:  “Stranger Safety”. During this lesson, kids will learn how to remain safe around strangers. Kids will learn about saying “No” to stranger requests and what they can do to keep themselves safe.  During this lesson, safety will be demonstrated and they will learn how to keep themselves away from strangers and what they can do when approached by a stranger.

Week Two:  “Bullying” will be focused upon. During this lesson, kids learn what is considered to be bullying and what crimes are committed by bullies. Cyber Bullying will be addressed as children are beginning to use the computer to communicate with their friends. Children will learn about the differences in each other and how to work, communicate and play with others despite those differences.
.
Week Three:  “Computer Safety”. During this lesson, kids will learn about the safety skills when using the computer. Kids are becoming more involved in the use of the computer to keep in touch with friends through social networks. There are increasing dangers in the computer world and kids need to know what they can do to keep themselves safe from predators on the computer.

Week Four:  “Communication” will be the focus of this week’s lesson. Today’s kids communicate nonverbally more often than verbally. Sometimes their nonverbal communication can be misinterpreted. This week the kids will learn about communicating effectively to avoid misinterpretation which can lead to bullying and cyber bullying.

Week Five:  “Bicycle Safety” will be presented and children will learn the rules of the road, and riding safely on their first set of wheels. Oftentimes children don’t know what the rules are when they ride their bikes on any road. Unsafe riding can lead to accidents with other cyclists or motorists.

Each week the topic will be covered with a short teaching lesson. The rest of the time, games and fun activities are planned, focusing on the topic listed for that week. We will again have relay and ball games, some projects to take home, and occasional water games, which is a large hit at every summer program. All sessions will be held outdoors except in inclement weather.

Please provide your child with a water bottle each week. Fresh water will be available at each site. Please send a light jacket or sweater with your child if the weather is cool. We will be outside at all sites for all activities, except on rainy days. The alternate site in case of rain at each location is nearby.
