FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
What types of emergencies will CodeRED be used for and how often will it be used?
Each county or city determines when, what type, and how often they wish to use CodeRED. Kewaunee County has decided to use CodeRED primarily for the following purposes: fires, floods, nuclear events, severe weather, missing children or elderly, school closings, water safety alerts, evacuation notices, chemical spills, drinking water contamination, viral outbreaks, utility outages, street closures, snow emergencies, etc. When issuing alerts for these types of emergencies, discretion will be used while maintaining the utmost goal of public safety.
Can I sign up if I live in a different county other than Kewaunee County?
No. This alert system is only available to residents of Kewaunee County. You can however register phone numbers outside of Kewaunee County, such as work phone numbers.
Why do I need to register?
You only need to register if you wish to receive the emergency alert:
- on your cell phone
- on your work phone as a back-up to your home phone
- if you recently moved,
- if you have an unlisted phone number,
- if you use TDD/TTY
- if you are a business.
Can businesses participate?
Yes. In fact, Kewaunee County encourages businesses to register to receive the emergency alerts. Click on the data collection link above and click "Switch to Business Data" to register your "business" phone number(s).
Can TDD/TTY equipment receive the calls?
Yes. When you register your number there is an option to enter the TDD/TTY information.
What if I’m not home to receive the alert message?
The CodeRED dialing system will leave the emergency alert message on your voicemail or answering machine. If you do not have voicemail or an answering machine, the dialer will attempt your phone number 3 times. This would be a great reason to register your work or cell phone number as a back-up number.
I am a caregiver for my elderly mother. Can I receive the alert on her behalf?
Yes. Caregivers and family members can register their phone number as an alternate.
Will I be charged for receiving a CodeRED alert?
No. Kewaunee County entered into a contract for the CodeRED service and there is no cost to the citizens for receiving emergency alerts.
What if I don't want to participate in CodeRED?
You can 'opt out' of the program offered by Kewaunee County by completing an 'opt out' form. Please refer to the information here.
